Windows fw, iptables in linux, newer products) - use some virus scanner / malware scanner ( lots of free / cheap ones.. MBAM, SpyBot, Avast) - education about the computer & programs - priceless, but also free, just search & read instructions. For general home security, again you don't need to spend thousands.. .. keep patio doors safe by dropping a broom handle in the door track .. use a good deadbolt lock, and always keep it locked. .. clear the area around windows, so neighbors can see someone sneaking about .. don't give away information to people you don't know & trust.. (news delivery.. postal delivery.. census takers, sales folks... etc.) There are lots of cheap security measures for anything. Most start with a little education & cautious use.
